How to make a video file smaller before sharing

If a video is too large to send or upload, try compressing it and check the result before sharing. FlareClip offers three compression presets and shows the original and output file sizes. The saving depends on the source; a smaller file can lose fine detail.

1. Choose your original video

Keep an untouched copy and select a video you own or have permission to process. The tool accepts supported MP4, MOV and WebM files. Use a standard SDR video without transparency, with zero or one mono or stereo audio track and no separate subtitle track. A supported file extension alone does not guarantee that every encoding inside it is accepted.

2. Pick a starting preset

Start with Balanced · Recommended for a general sharing copy. Quality first keeps the original display size but can still reduce detail through compression. Balanced fits the picture within a 1920 × 1080 landscape or 1080 × 1920 portrait box; Smaller file uses a 1280 × 720 or 720 × 1280 box. The picture is fitted proportionally without being enlarged. Check the expected dimensions shown for your video.

3. Inspect the source, then confirm export

Preview the video, choose a preset and confirm your right to use the material. Follow the sign-in and account information when you request processing. Inspect the source first; once its measured details appear, check the output settings and confirm the export. Selecting a file or playing the local preview does not create a compressed result.

4. Compare size and quality

After processing, compare the displayed original and result sizes. Play the same passage in both versions, paying attention to small text, faces, motion and sound. Also check the beginning and ending. If the result is still too large, try a stronger preset from the original file. If important details look worse, use a gentler preset or keep the original.

5. Check the downloaded file

Download the version you reviewed, open the saved MP4 and check that the destination accepts its size. There is no exact target-size control in this workflow, and a preset may produce a file that is not smaller than the original. Keep the copy that meets your needs rather than repeatedly compressing an already compressed result.
